Fire ring head gasket for the 12-valve Cummins, .070 inch thick with .105 inch wire at a 4.560 inch outside diameter. A fire ring seals by biting into a machined groove rather than relying on clamp load across a flat surface, which is what makes it hold when boost and cylinder pressure climb past what a stock gasket will take.
Key Features
- .070 inch (1.5mm) gasket thickness
- 4.560 inch wire outside diameter, .105 inch wire
- Groove specification: .025-.026 inch depth cut with a .120 inch radius cutter
Fitment
- 1989-1998 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins 12-valve
Machining and Installation
- Machine both head and block for flatness; this matters increasingly above 800 HP
- Under 800 HP the groove can be cut in the head only
- Above 800 HP, ARP 625 studs are recommended
- Always use a .120 inch radiused cutter for a consistent groove profile
- Head studs are required to achieve proper clamp load; lubricate nuts, washers and threads for even torque
- Torque to 130 ft-lbs before first startup, then hot retorque once at operating temperature
- Gasket compression changes valve lash, so set lash after the final retorque
- Never exceed the fastener manufacturer's torque limits
