Once a 24-valve is seeing more than about 35 psi of boost or drive pressure, or turning past 3,800 RPM, the factory springs stop controlling the valvetrain. At 80 lbs of seat pressure at 1.380 inches they let valves get blown open under boost, which pulls exhaust gas back into the cylinder on the intake stroke and slows combustion. Above 3,800 RPM the same lack of pressure allows valve float, and valve float is what fractures cast tappets.
Key Features
- 103 lb seat pressure against 80 lbs for the factory spring
- Controls the valvetrain to 4,500 RPM and 80 lbs of boost and drive pressure
- Prevents valves being forced open under high boost, and the reversion that follows
- Higher seat pressure with moderate nose pressure, so valvetrain control does not come at the cost of cam and tappet wear
Fitment
- 1998.5-2007 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins 24-valve
- 2007.5-2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins
Notes
- Tool steel retainers are not included and are sold separately
- Beyond 4,500 RPM, step up to the Hamilton Cams 110 lb competition springs
- Hamilton Cams warranties camshafts only when installed with Hamilton Cams tappets and valve springs.
