The xenon ballast is what actually runs a gas discharge headlamp: it strikes the arc, then holds the lamp at a stable operating current through several integrated control and safety circuits. When the ballast fails, the headlamp goes out completely. HELLA's 5DV 007 760-497 is a third-generation 12 volt unit.
