Break-In and Oil
Apply quality assembly lube to all lobes and lifter faces, prime the oil pump and filter, then crank with fuel disabled until oil pressure is confirmed. Never allow the engine to start without oil pressure. Bring it fully to operating temperature, perform any hot retorque before setting valve lash, then change oil and filter before normal service.
Flat-tappet valvetrains require 15W-40 oil with adequate zinc, phosphorus and molybdenum (5W-40 in sub-zero conditions). Approved oils include Valvoline, Schaeffer's, Mobil Delvac Extreme, LIQUI MOLY Touring High Tech, Driven Racing Oil and Shell Rotella.
