Steel-core version of the 188/220 grind, for builds that have outrun a cast camshaft. Same 188 degrees intake and 220 exhaust at .050 inch, same 1,700-4,500 RPM band, with Hamilton reporting 40-60 horsepower depending on fueling and turbo, and a 200-300F reduction in EGT.

Key Features

  • 188/220 duration at .050 inch lift
  • 1,700-4,500 RPM operating range
  • 40-60 HP gain depending on fueling and turbocharger
  • Drops EGT by 200-300F
  • Forged steel core for high-load applications

Fitment

  • 1989-2007 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins
  • 2007.5-2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins
  • Flat-tappet engines only

Clearance and Installation Requirements

  • The steel core requires at least two bushings installed in the cam tunnel; running steel directly against cast iron will damage the block
  • 12-valve drop-in: maximum .018 inch piston protrusion, minimum .055 inch valve face depth, standard head gasket, 99-degree intake centerline
  • 24-valve drop-in: maximum .018 inch piston protrusion, minimum .038 inch valve face depth, standard head gasket
  • If clearance falls short, run an oversized head gasket or cut valve reliefs
  • New tappets are recommended whenever a camshaft is replaced
  • Hamilton Cams warranties camshafts only when installed with Hamilton Cams tappets and valve springs.

Recommended Applications

  • Drag strip
  • Stock-class pulling

Break-In and Oil

Apply a liberal amount of quality assembly lube to the cam. On a fresh build, prime the oil pump with assembly lube and prime the filter. Disconnect fuel and crank until oil pressure registers or oil reaches the rocker arms. Never let the engine start without oil pressure. Run to operating temperature, hot retorque the head if required, then set valve lash and change the oil.

Flat-tappet valvetrains require 15W-40 oil with adequate zinc, phosphorus and molybdenum (5W-40 in sub-zero conditions). Approved oils include Valvoline, Schaeffer's, Mobil Delvac Extreme, LIQUI MOLY Touring High Tech, Driven Racing Oil and Shell Rotella.
