Complete 24-valve valvetrain package built on the 188/220 grind, which trades a little bottom end for stronger mid-range than the 178/208. Duration is 188 intake and 220 exhaust at .050 inch, operating from 1,700 to 4,500 RPM with a 200-300F EGT reduction.

Clearance Requirements
- 24-valve: .018 inch or less piston protrusion, minimum .038 inch valve face depth with a standard gasket
- If minimum clearance is not met, run an oversized head gasket or cut valve reliefs
Recommended Applications
- 24-valve engines with a 66mm or smaller charger at low RPM, or large singles at higher RPM
- Moderate singles or compound turbochargers — note that VP44 trucks should use the 178/208 instead
- Weekend performance use, drag strip and stock-class pulling
Break-In and Oil
Apply quality assembly lube to the camshaft and tappet faces, prime the oil pump and filter on a fresh build, and crank with fuel disconnected until oil pressure is confirmed. Never allow the engine to start without oil pressure. Perform any hot retorque before setting valve lash.
Flat-tappet valvetrains require 15W-40 oil with adequate zinc, phosphorus and molybdenum (5W-40 in sub-zero conditions). Approved oils include Valvoline, Schaeffer's, Mobil Delvac Extreme, LIQUI MOLY Touring High Tech, Driven Racing Oil and Shell Rotella.
