Complete 12-valve valvetrain package built on the 188/220 camshaft, an all-around performance grind that gives up a little low-end compared to the 178/208 in exchange for more on the top end. Supplied with the springs, pushrods and tappets the cam needs, so the valvetrain is matched rather than assembled from whatever was on the shelf.
What's Included
- 188/220 camshaft
- 155 lb 12-valve Cummins valve springs
- Retainers and locks
- Lifters and tappets
- Extreme duty pushrods
Fitment
- 1989-1998 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins 12-valve
Clearance Requirements
- 12-valve drop-in: maximum .020 inch piston protrusion, minimum .055 inch valve face depth, standard head gasket, 99-degree intake centerline
- If minimum piston-to-valve clearance is not met, run an oversized head gasket or cut valve reliefs
- Check clearances during assembly even though the cam is considered drop-in
Recommended Applications
- All-around performance builds
- Larger single turbochargers or compound setups
- Weekend performance use, drag strip and stock-class pulling
Break-In and Oil
Apply a liberal amount of quality assembly lube to the camshaft. On a new build, prime the oil pump with assembly lube and prime the filter. Disconnect fuel and crank until oil pressure registers or oil reaches the rocker arms. Never let the engine start without oil pressure. Once running, hold 1,200-1,500 RPM for five minutes, shut down, then set valve lash. Perform any hot retorque before setting lash, and change the oil after break-in.
Flat-tappet valvetrains require 15W-40 oil with adequate zinc, phosphorus and molybdenum (5W-40 in sub-zero conditions). Approved oils include Valvoline, Schaeffer's, Mobil Delvac Extreme, LIQUI MOLY Touring High Tech, Driven Racing Oil and Shell Rotella.
